Wet foam vs dry foam: which to reach for, and when

Fresh stems drink; silk and dried don't. A quick guide to picking the right brick so an arrangement holds without crumbling.
Start with the stems
Everything follows from one question: do the stems drink? Fresh flowers do, and they need a brick that holds water against the cut. Silk and dried do not, and water in that arrangement is only weight.
- Wet foam — fresh flowers, soaked once
- Dry foam — silk, dried, and permanent work
Soaking, the part everyone rushes
Float the brick and let it sink under its own weight. Pushing it down traps air pockets, and a stem that lands in one wilts a day early.
Soak it once. A re-soaked brick never recovers its lift.
Cutting to fit
- Measure the container against the brick
- Cut a little proud of the rim
- Bevel the top edge so stems can angle outward
